Church Without Walls (aptly named by some ex-students some years ago) came to fruition when we decided to amalgamate the KS4 Christian Union with the KS5 Christian Union on the Shooting Field site. This proved to be the best thing for the school as it saw students from Sixth Form and KS4 coming together and uniting in one purpose. It crossed the divide between boarding and day scholars, and across different cultures and church backgrounds. CWW is a place where everyone is welcome, irrespective of their belief, to discuss, share and learn about the biggest questions of life in an informal and friendly environment. It is where students can feel welcomed and part of a family. We like to think of it as a hospital for the broken, rather than a museum for the holy.
CWW meets on Thursday lunchtimes in Room 34. Squash and biscuits are provided.
Annually, in the spring term we run Youth Alpha after school, where we invite some ex-students/interns from Ashington Church to assist each week. This 11 week course gives 11-18 year olds the opportunity to explore how everyday life can be interwoven with the Christian faith. Students are encouraged to ask questions and share their point of view in an informal, friendly and open environment. A typical session includes a short talk, and a discussion at the end, where students can share their thoughts. Refreshments are also served.
In the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), we have a dedicated prayer space called the Breathing Space. The ‘Breathing Space’ is a tranquil place that students and staff can visit to pray, read, take time out to think and be restored. It is accessible to all staff and students at any time of day irrespective of their religion.
