We were delighted with this week's A Level results - congratulations to all our students and we are proud of all their achievements. Their next pathways into the worlds of university, apprenticeship and work are exciting ones and I am very grateful to all our staff, and to the support from home, for enabling our Sixth Form College students to 'be the best they can be'.
The press release below highlights the successes in one of our strongest sets of results at A Level at Steyning Grammar School, and picks out some of the individual success stories. I am proud of each of our students and there are three particular points I would draw out for you.
Firstly, despite the huge amount of curriculum change taking place at A Level (for 13 subjects this was the first phase of examination reform, with these subjects entirely examined at the end of Year 13, without modules or AS Levels counting towards the final result), our average grade rose to a B. This supports the judgements Ofsted made about our Sixth Form earlier this year - that Sixth Form Leadership is strong and effective, that teaching is high quality, mentorship highly effective, pastoral support particularly strong and that the culture of high expectations "ensures that all Sixth Formers are well prepared for their next steps". My thanks again go to all our staff for their decimated hard work.
Secondly, I am pleased with the high percentage of students taking STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at a time of national focus on this part if the curriculum. Nearly one third of our Sixth Formers take Maths for example, and the gender balance is almost equal across STEM. Results in these subjects were especially strong this year, with 48% A*-A in Chemistry, 38% A*-A in Maths, 33% A*-A in Biology and in Further Maths
Finally the breadth of our curriculum remains an important strength to us - we were extremely pleased for example with the 18% A* success in Art.
Congratulations to our Sixth Form students for such an excellent set of results and I wish them every success and happiness in their next chosen pathway.
