The Governing Body provides non-executive leadership.  It operates at a strategic level leaving the Headteacher and school leaders responsible and accountable to it for the operational day-to-day running of the school.

The Governing Body meets regularly and aims to fulfil the following three core functions:

  • Set the vision and strategic direction of the school
  • Hold the Headteacher and senior leaders to account for its educational performance
  • Ensure financial resources are well spent and managed

The Governing Body carries out these functions via 4 main committees whose minutes feed back into the full Governing Body meetings.  The 4 main committees are:

  • Boarding,
  • Student and Staff Welfare and Development,
  • Curriculum and Assessment,
  • Business.

The Governing Body at Steyning Grammar School has 16 full members and a number of associate members.

Governors are all volunteers and have a collective skill set that supports effective governance.

The Governing Body is accountable to Ofsted for its effectiveness and at the last inspection was judged to be ‘outstanding’.

The Governing Body adopts good practice and regularly reviews its own performance.

Below is a list of current governors and details of committee membership.

The Governing Body can be contacted through the Clerk to the Governors on:
