Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form College is one of the 130 institutions selected by the Harvard Club of London as a recipient of the annual Harvard Book Prize to be awarded to ‘an outstanding student in the penultimate year, academically excellent, with exceptional personal qualities, who makes a significant contribution to school or community’. Only 2000 of these prestigious awards are made globally each year. The Prize was presented by the Head, Mr Wergan at the welcome assembly and collective worship for students entering Year 13, their final year of learning at Steyning Grammar School. This years chosen Harvard Book Prize was;’ Enlightenment Now’.
The student who best fulfilled the remit of the prize following AS examinations in summer 2018 was Samuel Lazenby. This summer he attained 2 A* grades and 2 grades in Y12 Transition Exams in History, Politics, Maths and English Literature. We have been impressed by his studious intellectual ability, dedication and mature approach to independent learning. In summer 2018, he was a finalist in the Oxford University John Locke Essay Competition.
Samuel aspires to read PPE at degree level commencing in September 2019, with applications being made including to Oxford. He has fully embraced the wider life of the College including our Duke of Edinburgh Gold programme and volunteering as a pupil mentor. In Y12 he represented the School as a participant in the Rotary Youth Leader Award Scheme, contributing to his election as Head Boy for this academic year.
