Following a recent Section 8 Inspection, we are delighted that the inspection team confirmed that our previous Ofsted judgements remain in place - this means we are a 'Good' school with outstanding features.  This is under the new and tougher framework introduced since our previous inspection, and sits alongside our 'Outstanding' Ofsted judgement for Boarding, and our 'Outstanding' SIAMS (Church of England) inspection.

Ofsted highlighted the following particular areas of strength in our provision:

  • Parents, pupils and sixth formers are rightly proud of Steyning Grammar School and all that it achieves’
  • ‘The school vision ‘Every person the best they can be’…creates an aspirational culture; Steyning Grammar School is rapidly improving’

 The strengths Ofsted previously recognised as continuing to be strong:

  • Achievement of all students’
  • ‘Senior Leaders’ high expectations and Governors contribution to leadership’
  • ‘Leadership of the Sixth Form is particularly strong’

 Character Education

  • Leaders and Governors are justly proud of the school’s focus on opportunities to build character from year 7 through to Year 13’
  • ‘Parents recognise and value the well-rounded education that the school provides’

 Safeguarding and Welfare

  • There is a caring culture of vigilance and detailed record-keeping’
  • ‘Staff, pupils and parents report that pupils feel safe and well looked after at Steyning Grammar School’

 Teaching and Learning

  • A culture of sharing good practice and professional development opportunities’
  • ‘Middle leaders and teachers have high expectations and make good use of their subject and assessment knowledge to design stimulating lessons’

 Sixth Form College

  • Strong an effective leadership of the sixth form ensures that all requirements of the 16-19 study pathways are well met’
  • ‘High quality teaching, highly effective mentorship programme’
  • ‘Pastoral support is particularly strong – ‘their focus is 100% on you’’
  • ‘There is a culture of high aspirations coupled with quality careers advice’

 Next steps for the School

  • The overall attendance rates continue to be at least in line with national averages and they take action to improve the attendance of disadvantaged pupils still further’
  • ‘Consistently high-quality teaching meets the needs of all pupils, particularly the most able, in English and across the curriculum’

In September 2015 our boarding provision was inspected by OFSTED and was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in every category of the inspection report with no recommendations for improvement. The following are a few of the particular strengths OFSTED identified:

  • Care, kindness and acceptance are at the heart of the principles of the school. 
  • Students learn how to overcome life's adversities and succeed in their learning.
  • Equality and diversity is a real strength.

Inspection of us as a Church of England school was carried out in June 2016 with the following ‘outstanding’ summary judgment included in the final report:

"The distinctiveness and effectiveness of Steyning Grammar School as a Church of England school are outstanding.  The school has a very clear focus on the well-being of all members of the school community based on Christian Values, with students playing a leading role in chaplaincy, acts of collective worship and leading the flourishing Christian Unions across the school.  Students develop their moral conscience and contribute significantly to self-initiated charity fund-raising.  Succession planning and leadership development programmes are well developed for both staff and students."
